February 15th - Melbourne, Iowa

Image
On another sunny Sunday afternoon in Iowa we completed our latest trip, spending an hour or so driving around Melbourne, Iowa. At first we were concerned that it the necessary angles plus the position of the sun would make it difficult to get our usual pictures, but with a little investigation found places to shoot from. The Post Office was as neat as it looked on Google Street View, and we also found a nice war memorial along Main Street. 7 shots were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, with 3 added to the updated article on Wikipedia. Here are a couple of my favourites: As an added bonus, we were also able to eliminate one more Iowa article from the list of those needing photos with a quick trip to the Ashton Observatory, located within Ashton-Wildwood Park along Highway 330. February 8th - Cambridge, Iowa

Image
An earlier than usual start this Sunday necessitated a stop for coffee before heading off to Cambridge, this week's destination. As with all of our previous destinations we were not disappointed by what we found there! Even though we have only been working on this project for just over a month I have been impressed by and have a greater appreciation for the strength, vibrancy and character demonstrated by smaller communities in Iowa, especially in this era of urbanization. Thanks are due to the Cambridge Historical Association , not only for providing suggestions on photos to take (both the mural and memorial were fantastic and hopefully we did them justice with our shots) but for also mentioning us in their latest blog post! 10 shots were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, with 3 added to the updated article on Wikipedia. February 8th - Cambridge, Iowa

Our destination this week is Cambridge, Iowa ! This city of around 819 (as of 2000) was established in 1856 and shares its name with two famous college towns; Cambridge in England with the second oldest University in the English speaking world, and Cambridge, Massachusetts which is home to Harvard and MIT. While the Iowa version of Cambridge cannot claim to have it's own college it is only a few miles away from Ames, home to Iowa State University. If I was really reaching for a reason to visit I could also say that Cambridge is the name of a song by one of my favourite bands, Motion City Soundtrack . But I'm not so I won't :-). February 1st - Taking A Break

Image
While it would have been interesting to head to Clear Lake this weekend and capture the city as it prepares to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "The Day the Music Died" , we have decided to take a break in order to recharge batteries, prepare for the week ahead and plan our next trip (and not, as you might have been thinking, to watch a certain sporting event ). In the meantime there will be a post featuring Iowa pictures taken pre-blog that I hope you enjoy. Also don't forget that you can comment on any of the posts you see here, your feedback and thoughts are very welcome! You can also follow this blog via Blogger or on Twitter!
